If no files are specified, WordCount reads from the default input, making it possible to use it with pipes. When multiple files are specified on the command line, their names will be printed along with the counts. WordCount also keeps a total count for all named files. The switches LINES, WORDS, and CHARS may be used to specify that a subset of lines, words, and characters are to be reported. WordCount has a broad definition of a word. It considers a word to be any string of characters delimited by spaces, tabs, or new-lines. Using no switches is the same as using all three.
