The "sound" of the trumpet is made visible with light emerging from the trumpet and a media-effect. Music is sound, and sound itself is invisible. So the idea was to create an image where sound was substituted with light. That led to the concept of a trumpet emitting a lightbeam. The first idea was to place the trumpet in the upper pipe of a bigger trumpet. The lightsources were placed into the lower pipe and the light reflected through the hollow bow. The result of this design was quite "interesting", but produced nothing that could be recognised simply by viewing at this picture. Step two was to remove the outer trumpet, and add an additional lightsource. That looked better, but without a background it was quite dull. Step three was to fill the void with stars. The stars provide a nice background, but do not distract from the main theme. Finally the number and the size of the stars were adjusted, to create the final image. DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED: The trumpet is build with povrays CSG. It is build from pipes and toruses a cone and a lathe. Due to the initial design it is mostly hollow. The visible lightbeam ist another lathe object, with a media effect. The C-program starfield.c generates a list of 2000 calls of the macro star with random parameters. The macro places the stars on a cylinder. The stars, that are not directly visible are made bigger, so that more stars are reflected on the surface of the trumpet.
