TITLE: Fractal Mandala NAME: Stephen McAvoy COUNTRY: UK EMAIL: mcavoys@aol.com WEBPAGE: None TOPIC: Minimalism COPYRIGHT: I SUBMIT TO THE STANDARD RAYTRACING COMPETITION COPYRIGHT. JPGFILE: fmandala.jpg ZIPFILE: fmandala.zip RENDERER USED: Povray 3.5 TOOLS USED: Povray, Moray, tga2df3 RENDER TIME: 9.5 minutes for image 15 hours for df3 files HARDWARE USED: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3200+, 1GB Ram IMAGE DESCRIPTION: It is not Minimalism in the meaning of the school of abstract painting that emphasizes extreme simplification of form. It is Minimalism in so far as the scene has only one object and a camera and the object_s texture is derived from a Cubic Mandelbrot. Using the formula supplied in the Povray.binaries.images newsgroup by Andrew aka Invisible aka Orchid. DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED: I modified the formula supplied by Andrew and used a pigment function (suggested by Mike Williams in the same thread) to draw a series of images representing slices through the Mandelbrot. (At least that is what I think I did) I combined the images into a df3 density file using tga2df3. Then created a scene in Moray and tried to find a sweet spot. To get some variation in colour I redid the df3_s creating three, using the beginning, middle and end of the colour map. I then created a combined interior for the texture. I posted an earlier and less detailed image in Povray.binaries.images.
