TITLE: The Betrayal of Raytracing NAME: Kevin Quinn COUNTRY: U.S.A. EMAIL: kevinq2000@yahoo.com TOPIC: Surrealism COPYRIGHT: I SUBMIT TO THE STANDARD RAYTRACING COMPETITION COPYRIGHT. JPGFILE: pipe.jpg ZIPFILE: pipe.zip RENDERER USED: Povray 3.5 TOOLS USED: Moray Modeller, sPatch, Ultimate Paint, Babel Fish RENDER TIME: 2 Minutes HARDWARE USED: 533 mhz Intel Celeron, 64 Meg Ram, Windows 98 (First Edition) IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Each competition period there is one particular idea which pops up several times. For example, in the "mystery" competition, several people did variations on the theme of "board game." I think the popular idea this time will be variations on Rene Magritte's "The Betrayal of Images," an image of a pipe with the inscription "Ceci n'est pas une pipe," or "This is not a pipe," and one of the more famous of the classic Surrealism images. This is my contribution. The inscription reads, in English, "This is not a painting." And it's not, it's a rendering. DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED: The pipe itself was modelled in sPatch, and then imported into Moray for the texturing and the layout. The picture is taller than it is wide to mimic the layout of the original image. This is my second image for this competition, following "The Flight of Impossible Dreams." Doing a variation on this theme was the idea of my wonderful girlfriend, Jill, and I thank her for the idea and for her feedback. I didn't spend as much time on this picture as I might have, and it shows in the detail on the pipe, though I was also purposefully not modelling the pipe as accurately as I could have, because I was paying homage to the original image, not trying to duplicate it.
