From 1800 to 1815 the U.S. refused to pay tribute to the Muslim pirates that inhabited the north coast of Africa- called the Barbary States. Most European countries paid the tribute including England to avoid pirate raids on their ships. The U.S. blockaded Tripoli ( in modern Libya )in 1804. One of the frigates involved, the USS Philadelphia was driven aground by a storm and and captured. Stephen Decatur and a small group of men entered the harbor under cover of darkness and set fire to the Philadelphia and destoyed her. The Tripolitan War ended in 1815 after a squadron commanded by Decatur forced the dey of Algiers to sign a treaty renouncing US tribute. The United States no longer paid any tribute to the terrorist group and we never will.
