TITLE: Mare Oceanum NAME: Daniel Sobral COUNTRY: Portugal EMAIL: dvnss@mega.ist.utl.pt WEBPAGE: still working on it TOPIC: Sea COPYRIGHT: I SUBMIT TO THE STANDARD RAYTRACING COMPETITION COPYRIGHT. JPGFILE: oceanum.jpg ZIPFILE: oceanum.zip RENDERER USED: Povray 3.1 TOOLS USED: Moray v3.2 & Plugins PhotoDeluxe for the scanned heightfield image RENDER TIME: 6 minutes HARDWARE USED: Pentium III 450 (and a scanner) IMAGE DESCRIPTION: MARE OCEANUM: The big Ocean. All Oceans are one - huge mass of water that few tried to cross. In Europe, until about 1500, science was based on the Greek philosophers, and everyone thought the world was a flat disk, and that you would fell into the emptyness if you passed too near it's ending. It was a portuguese (Fern_o de Magalh_es) that stood against this way of thinking and made the first circumvalation journey. He never got to finish it (he died in South America) but the rest of his companions continued and proved to the world (actually, just Europe...) that they were wrong!! Personal comment: I am following this competition since about a year, and I've loved the spirit of the 'thing'. I haven't yet tried to make some work of my one until now. I know it is not good, but I just had to make something to remember portuguese descoveries (we are celebrating 500 years of The Descovery of Bresil) If some portuguese talker is seeing this: V_ l_, participem nem que seja como eu!... DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED: I used the functionality of Moray and Plugins that allowed me to make a simple work very quickly (hey, isn't this free advertising?? :-). It could also be (not so) easily made without moray, though!! Background: For the background, the Galaxy Plugin - by the way, in my .zip there is a .pov that you can use instead of moray, but you will need the galaxy plugin include files to be able to render it (or just remove it from the original). I used this background to enhance the feeling of celestial heaven, where god(s) live. The World: The less simple object: A round disc with a bumped texture to make as the world's ending A disc with ocean texture to be MARE OCEANUM A heightfield (based on hfinal2.tga - you have to convert .jpg --> .tga) This heightfield was the thing that took me longer to make (because it was hand and PhotoDeluxe (*more publicity*) made) I took the map from an history book. It represents a Mapa Mundi of the XIII century!! (I challenge you to recognize the different regions :-}) The Columns: I used the columns plugin and copy-paste-translate. (not very efficient code) The columns are to enhance the idea of a flat disc world, supported by 'heavenly forces'.
