COUNTRY: Australia RENDERER USED: povray 3.02 for windows TOOLS USED: "display" to convert to jpeg RENDER TIME: 4 minutes 2 seconds HARDWARE USED: Pentium II 300Mhz IMAGE DESCRIPTION: This image portrays the first encounter with a human for a cockroach through the cockroaches eyes. DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED: This is my first attempt at a full scene and for the most part, my first attempt at some decent modelling. I originally wanted to have a cockroach scurrying away from a spray can but because the camera is down low and the lighting up high most of the detail of the can was lost. I then changed to a fly swat but suffered the same lighting problems. So I decided to use this lack of lighting to my advantage. I thought I could make a silhouette of a shoe which would require not nearly as much detail as a full shoe model but could look just as good. So that is what I did. Since this was my first attempt at a scene I modelled each object in a seperate file. When finished I put the model into a file to be included into the main file. This also helps to simplify the main file because then I just have to have a bunch of object{} statements with a few rotates/translates/scales to get it into the right place in the scene. Shoe ---- The shoe is just a prism object in the outline of a shoe and a few boxes with a bit of csg to get the outline for the grip. Shoelace -------- The shoelace is almost entirely made of spheres to look like the threads in the shoelace. I used the order dependant transformations in povray to get a curve in the shoelace as I rotated the spheres. (ie translate then rotate to get the spheres to rotate about the origin) Then I just stuck a couple of spheres at the base and a cylinder. Antennae -------- Once again spheres with order dependant transformations to get a curve. I was originally going to model the antennae as one segment but an advertisement on tv showed a close up of two cockroaches mating. From that ad I could see that their antennae were segmented and are located just below the eye hence their position just below the camera in the scene. Powerpoint ---------- This is a standard Australian powerpoint. The bulk of it is a superellipsoid with some boxes cut out for the pin holes. The switches are made of cylinders (one cut out of another) Electrical Lead --------------- A couple of boxes for the pins. A couple of superellipsoids, cylinders and a cone and two segments of torii for the actual lead. Floor Boards ------------ Just simple boxes in a row. The nails are just simple discs floating just above the boxes. Cane Basket ----------- A lot of torii segments rotates again with order dependant transformations to get a row of cane. and then translate and rotate a bit for each successive row. Drawers ------- A box for the bulk of it. Superellipsoids for the top and bottom and for the front of each draw and spheres for the knobs. other ----- Just some prism objects for skirting boards and a couple of planes for the walls of course. Notes ----- There is an artifact located near the far pin hole on the powerpoint. I could not get rid of it. It depends on the camera angle and the resolution of the image. You will notice where the artifact appears in the reflection on the floor is totally different.
