TITLE: the flood of waters NAME: N.B. COUNTRY: Finland EMAIL: beliaev@utu.fi WEBPAGE: http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Gallery/7241/ TOPIC: Water COPYRIGHT: I SUBMIT TO THE STANDARD RAYTRACING COMPETITION COPYRIGHT. JPGFILE: ark04.jpg RENDERER USED: POV-Ray 3.01 for MS windows 95 TOOLS USED: Rhino 1 beta RENDER TIME: around 1h 30min HARDWARE USED: Pentium (586) 166 MHz with 32MB IMAGE DESCRIPTION: The idea of the flood came to me almost immediately, when I saw the topic. I guess the story of the flood is well known, so I'm not going to repeat it here. It's found in the Bible in the book of Genesis, chapters 6 - 9. If you are not familiar with the story, you can find it on line, for example, at http://rs7.loc.gov/nls/reference/bibles.html The image does not show the events described in the Bible in the proper order. What I wanted to show was the contrast between what's above surface of the water and what's below. There's another image at http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Gallery/7241/ark14.jpg on my webpage, that has a cross section through the water, so that it's more clear how, in my opinion, a city of the ancient corrupt world might have looked like. The temple, or the high place in the middle of the city, might have been a place used by those people 'to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire' 'as burnt offerings' to their gods. This idea is based on events described in the later chapters (Jer. 7:31, Jer.19:5, for example). DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED: The image was created entirely in POV-Ray. It was slightly gamma-corrected (it seems the monitor on my home machine is fading away...) and converted from TGA to JPEG in Photoshop. RAIN: I posted a question 'How to model rain in POV-Ray?' to IRTC-L mailing list. Thanks to everybody who came up with suggestions, that was really useful! Finally I made it as a number of planes in a #while loop with a bozo color_map with highly transparent colors, scaled significantly more along the y-axis and rotated -30 degrees along the z-axis. In order to blur colors I used a small amount of normal bump pattern scaled and rotated the same way as above. All the planes had the ior of 1.33 (water), and were clipped by a plane in y direction, to avoid interference with water RAINBOW: Is a modified standard POV-Ray rainbow. ARK: Made according to my understanding of it's description in the Bible. I compared a few versions in the three languages I speak fluently. Modelled in Rhino 1 beta, and exported as a number of triangular mesh objects, each object in a separate *.inc file. The logs forming the roof were created on basis of the lines made in Rhino, exported through DXF, and then manually edited. The ark has quite complex textures. WATER: A CSG merge object between a heightfield made in POV-Ray and a huge sphere (should be the radius of the Earth plus the thickness of water, but I did not use exact values). I did not scale the heightfield much along the y-axis to keep the underwater city still visible. CITY: A complex CSG made in POV-Ray text editor. The source is not included since the triangle meshes and the heightfield are too large. If you are interested in the source code, please email me. Best regards, N.B.
