TITLE: Portal to the Nightlands NAME: William Bobzien COUNTRY: USA EMAIL: bobzw@ils.unc.edu WEBPAGE: www.ils.unc.edu/~bobzw/tracerx TOPIC: Night COPYRIGHT: I SUBMIT TO THE STANDARD RAYTRACING COMPETITION COPYRIGHT. JPGFILE: bbportal.jpg ZIPFILE: bbportal.zip RENDERER USED: POV-Ray for Windows v3.02 TOOLS USED: Graph Paper, Paint Shop Pro RENDER TIME: Approximately 1 hour HARDWARE USED: P166, 48 MB RAM IMAGE DESCRIPTION: On the Plain of Terwin, approaching the Brokenback foothills, stands a portal erected by the great wizards of Kythria to link their world to that of Aerdon. On Aerdon were wrought magicks so powerful that the day itself was banished forever, giving Aerdon the name of the Nightlands in the lore of Kythria. The wizards maintain the portal both as a link to a world still imbued with great magick potential--and as a warning and reminder of the terrible price of magick ill-used. DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED: I had about a million ideas for this topic, like a lot of IRTCers I'm sure. They were all somewhat mundane, but interesting to me. I had started on several of them when this image came to me on the drive home from work. I had had the idea quite a while ago, but couldn't think of a way to bring it off without cheating. The solution came from out of nowhere on that drive home, and I sat down immediately upon getting home and started coding. This image, because of the technique I hit upon, presented some interesting compositional challenges. If you're wondering how it works, here's a hint: Things in this image are not where they appear to be. . .
