JPGFILE: helmhltz.jpg ZIPFILE: helmhltz.zip RENDERER USED: Real3D V3.5 TOOLS USED: ArtEffect true color paint program, The Gimp, NetBM. RENDER TIME: 8h20m HARDWARE USED: Amiga 4000, MC68040/40, 58 MB RAM, AmigaOS 3.1, NetBSD 1.2.1 IMAGE DESCRIPTION: The image shows a pair of Helmholtz Coils and a Power Supply on an experimental table. The main experiment which is to be set up in the middle of the pair of coils, where the magnetic field is almost homogeneous, is not yet installed completely. So far only the stand has been assembled. DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED: All objects in imagee are CSG except for the wires, which are b-spline meshes made by sweeping a cirular line along a path. The brick and wood textures are from the Internet and the label on the power supply was hand painted. The bumpy surface of some parts are achieved with algorithmic noise bump maps. The individual conductor loops of the coils are only simulated by a bump map; if I had had more time I might have modelled them by hand. To reduce moir_ patterns in on the coil surfaces and further reduce aliasing in the reflections the image was rendered with 2x2 forced supersampling in addition to "normal" antialiasing.
