TITLE: Window Seat, Part Deux NAME: Chip Richards COUNTRY: USA EMAIL: chipr@niestu.com WEBPAGE: http://www.niestu.com/gallery TOPIC: Glass COPYRIGHT: I SUBMIT TO THE STANDARD RAYTRACING COMPETITION COPYRIGHT. JPGFILE: winseat2.jpg RENDERER USED: BMRT 2.3.5 TOOLS USED: sced 0.94, GIMP 0.99, xemacs, xv 3.10a(PNG) RENDER TIME: 1 hour, 28 minutes HARDWARE USED: Every darned computer I could lay my hands on: my own 486 DX2-50, a Pentium 133 laptop, an HP 712/60, and a Pentium Pro 200. Final render was done on the Pro 200, of course. IMAGE DESCRIPTION: They say that truly great ideas never die. And this concept worked out so well for my brother admin last round (when the topic was "Flight") that, once I realized that it was equally applicable to "Glass", I couldn't resist. If next round's topic is "View From an Airplane" then perhaps someone else will capitalize on this timeless scene. DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED: In case anyone is wondering, I used nothing but Bill's concept. The image was done with a different modeller, a different renderer, on a different operating system. I think Bill's looks better. There's so much I wanted to do with this scene, but time and my inexperience with BMRT prevented me. The sky really is shaded, but the shading wandered out of the port hole and I couldn't chase it back in time. And the bump map looks like stucco, not like that horrible spray-on paint so many older airliners have inside. And don't get me started on the glass! And unless this is first class, where's the seat in front? (It's still laying on my disk, but looks a lot more like a big blue eraser than a seat.) Since there won't be any voting changes for next round, and since I'm starting earlier on my entry, and since I find "Glass" to be a very uninspiring topic, I'm expecting my next entry to be much better. It could hardly be worse! Anyone interested in the half-meg sced scene file, or the unreadable RIB file, or the lame hacked-together shaders (which were borrowed from a lot of talented people who doubtless wouldn't want their names mentioned here), has but to ask.
