I added a radial scalloped normal, and voila, something that looked like a balloon. I started playing with patterns, inspired by several photos. Some were straight colourmaps (gradient and radial) while the big blocky ones were simple gifs drawn (while very zoomed in) in PSP. The basket is simple GSGs. I built in more detail that necessary for this scene, as I am looking at some other scenes using this model. The landscape was created in HF-Lab, and I drove all over the thing (using the built in POV Animation loops) looking for a good background. If anyone comes up with a good tutorial on getting what you want out of HF-Lab (with examples) let me know! The balloons were hand placed but with random rotations to get the "sweeping up into the sky" feeling I wanted to project. For the same reason, I chose a looking quite up vantage point, (can be seen in the circular distortion of the clouds) almost a fish-eye type distortion. The snow-capped mountains were easy, but I still don't like the rock texture, and was tiring of it. Someday I may come back and improve on it.
