TITLE: Dancing Lights NAME: Erik Shelley COUNTRY: USA EMAIL: shell_erik@hotmail.com WEBPAGE: www.erikshelley.com TOPIC: Dancing COPYRIGHT: I SUBMIT TO THE STANDARD RAYTRACING COMPETITION COPYRIGHT. RENDERER USED: POV-Ray for Windows v3.5 TOOLS USED: Perl, MIDI-Perl, Cakewalk, Dave's Targa Animator, TMPGEnc CREATION TIME: A couple days to create. About 1.5 hrs to render the frames. HARDWARE USED: 1.73 GHz 1GB RAM VIEWING RECOMMENDATIONS: Make sure you can hear the music ANIMATION DESCRIPTION: Lights appear and rise with each note played on the piano. The brightness of the lights and how long they glow approximate the perceived loudness of the notes. DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS ANIMATION WAS CREATED: I composed and recorded the piano piece using Cakewalk Home Studio sequencing software and my Kurzweil PC2 keyboard. I saved the song in MIDI and WAV formats. I wrote a Perl script and used the MIDI-Perl library to parse the MIDI file and generate a simple POV file to be rendered. After rendering the frames in POV-Ray I used Dave's Targa Animator to create an .AVI animation file. Finally I used TMPGEnc to combine the .AVI and .WAV files into the final MPEG with sound.
