TITLE: Spatial Decay NAME: H. E. Day (Howard Earl) COUNTRY: USA EMAIL: PovRayGuy@aol.com WEBPAGE: http://www.teleport.com/~milan/CylyCON/index.html TOPIC: Decay COPYRIGHT: I SUBMIT TO THE STANDARD RAYTRACING COMPETITION COPYRIGHT. MPGFILE: spd.mpg ZIPFILE: spd.zip RENDERER USED: Pov Ray 3.1 (Superpatched) TOOLS USED: GUM 0.98, Adobe Photoshop 4.01 RENDER TIME: ~128 hours HARDWARE USED: Pentium 200Mhz MMX 32MB RAM ANIMATION DESCRIPTION: This is about a small conflict between two opposing forces - Edge pirates, and the COM space defense force (Confederation of Man). Anyway, the MPEG starts with you looking at a debris field, the product of pirate activity. Two COM Lancer-class interceptors fly through the debris, the last reported position of the Cornada, a free freighter. A wing of pirate fighters blow by, and the action begins! HOW THIS ANIMATION WAS CREATED: The Spacecraft were slightly influenced by the upcoming Space-Strategy game Homeworld (www.homeworld.net). I used many of the superpatch's special objects in the flic, such as sphere_sweeps and...well lots of sphere_sweeps. These are great for pipes on the craft's surface and are much less memory-consuming than torii and cylinders. The cockpit canopy was made with heightfields, and turned out rather well. The modelling, as always, was done in GUM. The code included is intended to show how I made this animation, but does not include any texture_maps or additional plug-ins. I would like to thank Chris Colefax for the Galaxy.inc, and Nathan Kopp for his Lens-Flare includes. Thanks to TonyB for his help in recommending an AVI to MPEG converter. Enjoy! H.E. Day <>< P.S. Included in the ZIP is a short-story I did for school, also entitled Spatial Decay. I'm proud to say that it got a A, despite being about cheesy spaceships and dogfights.
